Plot
In a secluded mansion at the end of the nineteenth century, Agnes is dying from a painful illness. Her sisters, Maria and Karin, return to remain by her side, but their reunion exposes years of emotional distance, repressed desires and unresolved wounds.
As Agnes's condition worsens, genuine tenderness comes primarily from Anna, the family's devoted maid. Through an unforgettable visual world dominated by red, white and black, Ingmar Bergman creates an intimate and devastating meditation on death, faith, human connection and the need to be loved.
