Plot
In Italy shortly before the Second World War, the cheerful and imaginative Guido arrives in a small town and falls in love with Dora, a schoolteacher. Through humour, determination and boundless optimism, he wins her heart and together they build a happy family.
When the persecution of Jewish people tears their lives apart, Guido and his young son are sent to a concentration camp. Determined to protect his child from the horrors surrounding them, Guido uses his imagination to transform their terrifying circumstances into an elaborate game. Roberto Benigni creates a deeply moving story about paternal love, hope and the resilience of human dignity.
